My first catch!

I finally got my first catch yesterday!

Was feeling the itch just to fish so I headed out to the nearby lake, Jurong lake to be precise, at about 6pm.

There's two jettys where one can fish from. Since I stayed quite near the lake, I just packed my gear and walked. It was a short 10 minute walk.

On reaching the jettys, there was a family doing some fishing as well. Since the first jetty was occupied, I headed out for the next one which was further away.

For this trip, I didn't have any bait as it was just a spur of the moment. What I ended up using was "roti prata", an indian fried bread. Got my rod out and setup quickly. I was casting soon but no luck for the first 20 minutes.

Then I noticed movement in the water, bubbles and ripples near the jetty itself. So instead of casting far, I just dropped my line near the jetty and proceeded to drag around the outer perimeter of the jetty.

5 minutes later I got a strong bite! It felt like my line was being sucked in. I let the fish pull on the line a little bit and then I was pulling back on my rod and reeling it in. It was a short fight but exciting nevertheless.

Laid the struggling fish on the jetty and unhooked it. And I took a photo of it with my handphone cam:

I think its a tilapia, about 6 inches in length.

I tried another 15 minutes but no bites at all. It was already 7+ in the evening and almost dark, so I packed and called it a day.

Ah I'm happy....

First fishing trip

I joined my colleagues on my first fishing trip at Pasir Ris Pro Pond last night.

They were there first and I reached at about 1145pm. As I was the newbie, they helped me get started right away, tying knots, setting up my line.

Soon I was hooking salted prawns onto my hook and casting off. Had some problems casting but I soon got the hang of it.

The next problem was waiting for a bite. I felt some bites but was unable to hook anything... sigh... and very quickly 4 hours passed...

No luck at all...

My new rod and reel

Finally got the time to head down to the fishing shop nearby my workplace with my colleagues during lunch last Friday.

At the shop, we tried a couple of rods, found a few suitable ones but those were way over my budget. The cheaper ones were a little bit flimsy and we wondered how long it'll last before snapping. I finally settled on one which felt balanced in my hands, a cheap 5 ft that wasn't too flimsy or too rigid. A DAM Crosspower rod which can take about 10-15 g of lure.

Next the reel, as my budget was low, I kind of had very little choice, so I got a SureCatch front drag spinning reel, 6 ball bearings.

Initially, I wanted to keep the budget to SGD$50 but I ended up blowing it by $18.

Ah well....

Welcome!

Welcome to my fishing blog.

My name is Mark and I'm a beginner (newbie!) at fishing.

I've always wanted to fish when I was a kid, but unfortunately, didn't have the opportunity to.

Lucky for me, I now have colleagues who are fishing enthusiasts and what the heck, time for me to get started!

So join me on my journey in fishing...
